Diadeis and Bridgehead Support Orphans in Mauritius

We’re very excited to share news about a wonderful collaborative project between Bridgehead and our Diadeis team. Together they’re helping to raise funds and make improvements to an orphanage in Mauritius that’s home to dozens of abandoned children.

Laura Crosby and Vicky Skelton from Bridgehead and Daniel Deverell from The Maltings (both based in Hull) are currently working on secondments in our Diadeis office in Mauritius. Whilst there they heard about an organisation, SOS Children’s Villages, which was asking for 100 volunteers to help paint the homes in a local orphanage.

There are two SOS Children's Villages in Mauritius that care for around 113 abandoned and parentless children; this project focused on the one in Beau Bassin, which was established in 1992. Designed with attractive Créole architecture and situated close to the Balfour Garden, it’s an excellent arrangement that consists of nine family houses with the capacity to accommodate around 150 children.

SOS Children’s Villages provide pre-school and primary education, literacy and other learning activities, as well as counselling from professional psychologists, support from social workers to build relationships between children and their new parents, and a focus on giving young people the tools they need to become well-rounded, confident and independent. Since opening, over 140 children have left the village and integrated into the community as productive adults.

Each home has an SOS parent to care for the children, making it a safe and welcoming environment where young people can learn and grow. These homes were very much in need of renovation, so our team members got involved by sanding down walls, doors and door frames before painting them in bright colours.

But it wasn’t just Laura, Vicky and Daniel who lent a hand, as they managed to rustle up a team of 30 people to donate time to this worthy cause. Staff from Diadeis Mauritius, new trainees and some expats from India assembled one day to get stuck in, with sgsco supplying lanyards and Diadeis providing transport to collect all of our volunteers from around the island.

It was a fantastic day and together they delivered hundreds of hours of hard work, which resulted in a four-bedroom house with kitchen, living room, bathroom and staircase being fully painted and given a whole new look.

Meanwhile, here in the UK, Claire Ordine and Sarah Mohamed at SGS Bridgehead are organising a cake day to raise funds, complemented by collecting toys, clothing and football shirts. Everything will then be presented to the orphanage by our team at Diadeis, which we’re sure will bring smiles to the children’s faces. Truly fantastic work by everyone involved!

There’s all kinds of charitable activity taking place across SGS Packaging Europe’s offices, so keep up to date by following us on FacebookTwitter and Instagram.
