Our Apprentices Raised £852 for Local Charities

Image
If you work in The Maltings or Bridgehead, you're sure to have met at least one of our apprentices who joined us last year. Chances are you've also played a part in their community projects, which were put in place to support  Hull Homeless Community Project (HHCP), Yorkshire Cancer Research, Hull and East Yorkshire Mind and Aaron’s Battle, helping them to raise awareness and funds for these four very worthy causes. If you're not sure what being an apprentice at SGS involves, here's a quick summary: Each one receives in-depth training, one-to-one mentoring and specific tasks as part of their training, as well as taking part in regular  development days that cover a variety of topics . This combination of approaches ensures that the apprentice learns everything they need to know in their particular field, whilst receiving practical advice on a regular basis from their line manager. The scheme also gives the apprentices ownership over a yearlong

Mark's Running the Doncaster 10K in Aid of Hull Animal Welfare

Mark Crane is a QC Technician at The Maltings, based in the P&G Homecare department and has been with the company for almost six years. He’ll soon be running the Doncaster 10K in aid of Hull Animal Welfare and has something special planned if he hits his fundraising target. “I’ve completed numerous 10k runs in the past, including Hull, Laxton and Bridlington,” says Mark. “I’m a massive animal lover and always have been, plus I own pets myself, so I want to raise money for a local animal charity that doesn't get the same amount of national funding as many others do.” When Mark was deciding which organisation to support, Hull Animal Welfare immediately sprung to mind. He says that he has adopted pets from them in the past and also has friends and relatives that did voluntary work when they were younger: “They are a fantastic charity and do an amazing job in helping animals to find their forever homes, as well as all the of hard work that goes into rescuing and rehabil

Meet Josh, One of Our New Apprentices

Image
Last year, our offices at The Maltings and Bridgehead launched the SGS apprenticeship scheme, which gives people the opportunity to learn all about our fascinating industry whilst benefitting from mentoring, development days and ownership over fundraising projects. We’re now in the process of welcoming a fresh intake of apprentices to offices in Hull and Tamworth , with 18-year-old Josh Minter being one of our new starters at The Maltings. We caught up with Josh to find out what he thinks about his training so far. “Before I joined SGS as an apprentice I was at college studying the public sector, and before that I studied business studies and media studies,” says Josh. “I knew I wanted to be involved within digital media due to my previous history with media studies and graphic design at high school. I was looking for an apprenticeship as opposed to university because I wanted to get into a sustainable career within a field I have a passion for, based at a place where I would e

Sweet Success at World's Biggest Coffee Morning

Image
Last week, Helen Padget-Smith and Danni Monk at The Maltings organised their office’s edition of the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning, which is Macmillan Cancer Support’s largest fundraising event. Our colleagues love getting involved with these fun get-togethers, with the entire building taking part by putting up decorations in every room and having a natter over a cuppa. No matter where you were in The Maltings that day, you were guaranteed to smell some of the sweet treats that had been specially baked or purchased for the event. These included cheesecake, sponge cakes, blueberry cake, peanut butter and chocolate cookies, melting moments, various brownies, chocolate and strawberry cake, vanilla cupcakes, chocolate cupcakes, fruit cake, lemon cake, milk chocolate cookies, fruit tarts and an assortment of buns, not to mention plenty of tea and coffee. Helen and Danni also put on a game called A Berry Good Guess, which was won by Richard Cook and Jac De Groot. Half the proce
