Sweet Success at World's Biggest Coffee Morning

Last week, Helen Padget-Smith and Danni Monk at The Maltings organised their office’s edition of the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning, which is Macmillan Cancer Support’s largest fundraising event. Our colleagues love getting involved with these fun get-togethers, with the entire building taking part by putting up decorations in every room and having a natter over a cuppa.

No matter where you were in The Maltings that day, you were guaranteed to smell some of the sweet treats that had been specially baked or purchased for the event. These included cheesecake, sponge cakes, blueberry cake, peanut butter and chocolate cookies, melting moments, various brownies, chocolate and strawberry cake, vanilla cupcakes, chocolate cupcakes, fruit cake, lemon cake, milk chocolate cookies, fruit tarts and an assortment of buns, not to mention plenty of tea and coffee.

Helen and Danni also put on a game called A Berry Good Guess, which was won by Richard Cook and Jac De Groot. Half the proceeds went to Macmillan and the other half to the winners, with Jac declining her winnings in aid of the charity. By the end of the day, a whopping £278.72 had been raised by our colleagues in The Maltings, which is now being sent to Macmillan.

But it wasn’t just the city centre office that took part, as our Bridgehead branch also put on their very own World’s Biggest Coffee Morning. They laid out a beautiful spread of cakes, bakes, buns and doughnuts, also making full use of Macmillan’s branded tablecloths, balloons, cake decorations and donation boxes. Together our Bridgehead colleagues raised £180, bringing the total raised across both offices to £458.72, which really is fantastic.

We love Macmillan’s coffee mornings and chances are that you’ve taken part in one too at some point. However, did you know that the first one was held in 1990, when a local fundraising committee put on a coffee morning where the cost of the refreshments was donated to Macmillan? The event proved so popular that it was rolled out nationwide the following year, and so far the September 2019 edition has raised over £2.8m across the UK.

As for how the money is used, Macmillan gives these excellent examples:

£52 could help run Macmillan’s Online Community forum for over an hour. Typically, that would give nearly 750 people affected by cancer both emotional and practical support.
£250 could pay for five people living with cancer to attend a health and wellbeing event, providing them with the skills to improve the management of these areas in their lives.
£335 could pay for a Macmillan grant that helps a family affected by cancer take a holiday and enjoy precious time together.
£546 could pay for a Macmillan Social Care Worker for a week, helping patients, family members and carers manage the social and practical problems of living with cancer.
£1023 could pay for a Macmillan nurse for a week, helping people living with cancer and their families receive essential medical, practical and emotional support.
As always, we’re very proud of our colleagues for taking the initiative to organise their own events and show so much generosity. We can’t wait for the next World’s Biggest Coffee Morning!
