SGS Colleagues are Supporting Mind
Over the past year SGS has carried out a
lot of work in collaboration with and in support of Mind, the mental health
charity. If you don’t know much about what the organisation offers, this
article highlights some of its key services that are available around the UK.
Mind works to a strategy that influences
all of the activity it delivers, with the 2016-21 theme being ‘Building on
Change’. This is the charity’s next stage in its journey towards the ultimate
ambition of providing support and respect for everyone with a mental health problem.
Mental health is a subject that everyone has at least a small understanding of,
such as themes of depression and anxiety, yet the full scope of Mind’s work is
much more far-reaching.
For example, did you know that eating
disorders, phobias, PTSD, bereavement, hoarding, body dysmorphic disorder, panic
attacks, drug and alcohol problems, self-harm and even excessive anger all come
under the mental wellbeing umbrella? By putting all of the relevant information and guidance you need in one easily accessible place, Mind is helping
people to look after their own mental health as well as support friends, family
members and work colleagues with any issues that might arise.
However, sometimes people find it hard
to open up in person about their mental health, which is where Mind’s Elefriends app comes in extremely
useful. This online community is a safe place for discussing, listening and
sharing, and specially designed so that you can be yourself and talk about
anything that’s weighing on your mind. Meanwhile, the organisation also specialises
in providing expert guidance to children, parents and carers. With the mental health of young people often influencing
or carrying on into adulthood, it’s essential that problems are immediately given
the attention they deserve in order for the individual to achieve a healthier,
happier lifestyle.
SGS is putting a lot of focus into the
wellbeing of our colleagues in the UK and Europe. We strive to make our offices
and work environments as open, vibrant and collaborative as possible, with many
managers and team leaders taking Mental Health Awareness training to better
equip them for a range of situations. If you have a mental health problem and
would like to speak to someone at work about it, please don’t be afraid to ask
for help.
It’s also worth taking a look at Mind’s tips for everyday living, which cover a variety of topics that include food
and mood, LGBTIQ+ mental health, loneliness, mindfulness, relaxation, sleep
problems, and how factors such as work, money and nature can play a role in how
you feel on a daily basis.
We’re very proud to be working with Mind
and our colleagues have done an amazing job of getting involved too. From our
apprentices raising money for the charity last year, to colleagues wrapping
Christmas presents in exchange for a donation to the charity (see photo above),
there’s a lot going on here at SGS and there’s more to come during 2020.
