Race for Life in Aid of Cancer Research UK

Image
As soon as the nice weather arrives, we know that tons of fitness-based charity activity is going to take place at our offices throughout the UK. A recent edition was Sara Kruger and Steph Hawksley running the Race for Life in aid of Cancer Research UK – a fun day that supported a very worthy cause. Sara and Steph are artworkers within the Pharmaceutical department at our office in The Maltings. Their roles involve working with artwork files and getting them ready for the print stage. This is a huge responsibility and requires a lot of focus, yet they both managed to free up enough time to participate in the event on Sunday 7 th  July at the Costello Leisure Centre in Hull. “We took part because, sadly, we both lost our mums to cancer,” says Sara. “The two of us decided to do this in their memory whilst raising funds for a relevant charity. We had both done similar things in the past but this was the first one we have done together.” To prepare for Race...

Vicky Skelton Returns from a Yearlong Secondment in Mauritius

Image
Vicky (centre) with her trainees in Mauritius Vicky Skelton is an Artwork and Repro Operator working on the Waitrose account at our Bridgehead office in Hull. She’s just joined the team and her colleagues are being very helpful and supportive, although Vicky isn’t technically an SGS newbie. “When I joined SGS I got stuck in right away,” she says. “Over time, the company acquired new work and I’ve been involved in multiple accounts, brands and projects. As the artwork process is already very well established, it is usually quite similar between teams, so it’s good to have variety of work. Then the opportunity arose to work on secondment in Mauritius, so I leapt at the chance.” Vicky temporarily left her hometown to help with the acquisition of Diadeis, which is now part of sgsco: “Most of my time was spent training in a classroom environment, working closely with HR on recruitment and the training process. I also supported new accounts during their recruitment p...

Apprenticeship Charity Fun Day at Bridgehead

Image
We’re sure you know by now that we have two teams of apprentices based at Bridgehead and The Maltings who are doing an incredible job of raising money for four charities of their choosing. Last year they were tasked with deciding who to support and how to do it; since then, their creativity and passion has been truly inspiring. The apprentices are supporting Hull Homeless Community Project, Hull and East Yorkshire Mind, Yorkshire Cancer Research and Aaron’s Battle by raising awareness, getting involved in community engagement, and putting on a range of fun activities for their SGS colleagues. Earlier this year we had everything from bags of Valentine’s sweets to a highly successful promise auction, and now that it’s summertime we’ve enjoyed the first of two Charity Fun Days. Taking place at Bridgehead on Thursday 27 th June, we couldn’t have asked for better weather for what turned out to be a fantastic and hilarious day of putting the “fun” into “fundraising”. First of all ...

Dynamic Duo Raise Funds for Macmillan, BHF and William's Fund

Image
Helen Padget-Smith and Esme Needham are project managers at our offices in The Maltings. In true SGS Packaging Europe style, they work hard to not only help the business togo from strength to strength, but also apply their passion and creativity into raising funds for worthy causes. Along with many of our colleagues in Hull, the duo recently took part in the Hull 10K. Whilst Esme had run one before (last year’s edition of the event), Helen had previously run five 10K races, two half marathons and eleven 5K-6K races: “I started running two and a half years ago and really got into it. The result is forty races planned for between November 2018 and November 2020.” In preparation for the Hull 10K, Helen and Esme visited the gym together twice a week to focus on cardio and strength training. Six weeks before the event, they also went on one run a week lasting between six and eight kilometres. If this doesn’t show commitment, we don’t know what does! As well as...
