Apprenticeship Charity Fun Day at Bridgehead

We’re sure you know by now that we have two teams of apprentices based at Bridgehead and The Maltings who are doing an incredible job of raising money for four charities of their choosing. Last year they were tasked with deciding who to support and how to do it; since then, their creativity and passion has been truly inspiring.

The apprentices are supporting Hull Homeless Community Project, Hull and East Yorkshire Mind, Yorkshire Cancer Research and Aaron’s Battle by raising awareness, getting involved in community engagement, and putting on a range of fun activities for their SGS colleagues. Earlier this year we had everything from bags of Valentine’s sweets to a highly successful promise auction, and now that it’s summertime we’ve enjoyed the first of two Charity Fun Days.

Taking place at Bridgehead on Thursday 27th June, we couldn’t have asked for better weather for what turned out to be a fantastic and hilarious day of putting the “fun” into “fundraising”. First of all was the car wash, which saw the apprentices pop on their high-vis vests and spruce up almost forty motors in exchange for a few coins. The cars were left gleaming in the summer sun and our colleagues’ generosity meant that lots of cash was raised in the process.

All four charities were also in attendance, sharing information and advice with SGS employees whilst getting to know more about our vibrant company culture. Andrew Smith of HHCP was delighted with the response and talked to many of our colleagues about supporting Hull’s homeless community. The same goes for Hull and East Yorkshire Mind (who also offered one-to-one support sessions), Yorkshire Cancer Research and Aaron’s Battle, whose representatives loved being part of the charity day and felt that everything went brilliantly.

Then there was the unforgettable highlight of the day – managers in the stocks! Huge thanks goes to Richard Jones, Adam Stephenson, Ian Clark, Andrew Dawson, Paul Ford, Andy Cochran, Bill North, Mark Hooley and James Grant for being such good sports and being prepared to get utterly drenched (which they most certainly did). This took place over the lunch period, with staff paying 50p for a sponge and £1 for three. Needless to say, a lot of people parted ways with a pound coin or two. We even had a crepe van on the premises so that everyone could grab a bite to eat whilst soaking their bosses (we really should do this kind of thing more often).

As you can imagine, we’re incredibly proud of our apprentices for organising this wonderful day, which so far has raised £328.44. In fact, it went so well that they’re planning another one at The Maltings on Thursday 25th July. Make sure to bring a pound so that you can get involved in the sponge action, and for a little extra you can throw a full bucket at your manager of choice. It’s all for a worthy cause, after all.
