Race for Life in Aid of Cancer Research UK

As soon as the nice weather arrives, we know that tons of fitness-based charity activity is going to take place at our offices throughout the UK. A recent edition was Sara Kruger and Steph Hawksley running the Race for Life in aid of Cancer Research UK – a fun day that supported a very worthy cause.

Sara and Steph are artworkers within the Pharmaceutical department at our office in The Maltings. Their roles involve working with artwork files and getting them ready for the print stage. This is a huge responsibility and requires a lot of focus, yet they both managed to free up enough time to participate in the event on Sunday 7th July at the Costello Leisure Centre in Hull.

“We took part because, sadly, we both lost our mums to cancer,” says Sara. “The two of us decided to do this in their memory whilst raising funds for a relevant charity. We had both done similar things in the past but this was the first one we have done together.”

To prepare for Race for Life, Steph and Sara made sure to fit in plenty of training, which they did separately but kept each other on the same page by sharing regular updates. When the event day arrived, the duo were ready and raring to go.

“The atmosphere was brilliant and we both really enjoyed it,” says Sara. “Seeing so many people taking part or supporting the runners was really uplifting. It felt good to be part of something so special and important. The biggest challenge was probably the fact that so much of it was on grass, which makes it harder. Plus the heat – it was roasting!”

Sara and Steph agreed to raise money for Cancer Research UK, with the funds going toward the study of all types of cancer. Thanks to charities like this, cancer survival rates have doubled over the past forty years and consistent progress is being made, as improvements to technology and ground-breaking work offer new opportunities to find different ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer and improve survival rates even further. Events such as the Race for Life 5K greatly help not-for-profit organisations to invest time, training, research and resources into crucial work that will make the world a better place for future generations to live in.

We’re very proud of all of our colleagues who take part in and support all kinds of fundraising events. As for Steph and Sara, they say that next year’s Race for Life is definitely on the cards.
