Tamworth Colleague is Raising Funds for Bowel Cancer UK

Hannah Johnson is a Senior Account Manager at our Tamworth branch who is taking on a demanding physical challenge in aid of a very worthy cause.

She, her mum and some friends are going to attempt the Yorkshire Three Peaks on Sunday 13 April, which involves a 24-mile walk up and down three mountains within just twelve hours.

Hannah and her group are raising funds for Bowel Cancer UK and would really appreciate any donations toward supporting the essential research that the organisation invests into this disease:

My dad was diagnosed with bowel cancer last year through the screening programme,” says Hannah. “It was a really tough time for the family and the first time we have had to go through something like this. The team of doctors and nurses that looked after him were incredible, so I wanted to do something to give a little back to them.”

Hannah chose the Three Peaks specifically because she wanted a genuine challenge: “I googled things that could be done and came across this. I knew that it wasn't too far from where I live, and I could get practices in fairly easily. I think it's a tough undertaking but hope we can also see some great views at the same time.”

This is the first time that Hannah has done the Three Peaks Challenge or anything similar, as it involves walking 24 miles with 5,200 feet of ascent. Presenting beautiful views of the Pennine range, the area encircles the head of the valley of the River Ribble. Perhaps most importantly, all of this has to be completed within twelve hours.

“There are eight to ten of us taking part,” says Hannah. “We’ve done a lot of practice walks in Yorkshire and the Peak District, with the first one back in December. This wasn't the greatest idea as it was freezing! We’re also doing a lot of uphill walking at the gym and general fitness activities to improve our cardio performance.”

Thanks to the generosity of her friends, family and co-workers, Hannah’s JustGiving page has already exceeded its target. Originally hoping to raise £2,000, it currently stands at £2,416.91, but don’t let that put you off making a donation as every penny will go straight to Bowel Cancer UK.

I think the biggest challenge will be ensuring that we complete it in the timeframe given,” adds Hannah. “We're doing this as a team so want to ensure we all finish together on time. There won’t be anyone left behind!”

Hannah also tells us that she’s most looking forward to the sense of shared achievement when they complete the challenge together, all while raising a large sum of money for a charity that’s close to their hearts: “I’m hoping the views will be worthwhile too,” she adds. From what we’ve seen, we’re positive that they will be!
