Bridgehead Came Together to Walk All Over Cancer

Cancer Research UK’s slogan is “together we will beat cancer”, and the charity truly lives up to this promise by making fundraising and involvement as fun and easy as possible. A particularly enjoyable event is Walk All Over Cancer, which invites people to walk 10,000 steps every day for an entire month.

Our colleagues at Bridgehead decided that this would not only be a great way to raise money for the organisation, but to also have a bit of friendly competition. Team Brand and Team Retail put their own spin on the challenge by trying to beat the other’s total, which took place throughout March. Thirty people got involved and the result was truly incredible.

“People came up with loads of great ideas for adding to their step count,” says Karl Thomas, Reprographic Artworker and the organiser of the event. “Some took their dogs out for longer walks, others chose the stairs instead of lifts, and many of us would walk over to speak to colleagues when an email would be the normal route.”

Karl tells us that some people even paced up and down whilst the kettle was boiling, plus a group of them took advantage of the woodland path near Bridgehead Business Park by doing two laps during lunch.

“We have a couple of cyclists who ditched the bikes in exchange for walking throughout March too,” adds Karl. “Everyone was really committed to the cause.”

Based on the average person’s stride, we each walk around five miles a day, which adds up to 150 miles by the end of the month (a little further than walking from Hull to Cambridge). Bridgehead really went for it, with Team Retail managing 4,201,114 steps and Team Brand racking up an even more impressive 5,066,377.

These totals combined come to 9,267,491 steps – approximately 4,388 miles. To put this into perspective, if you were to travel this distance in a straight line from the Bridgehead building, it would take you to Denver in Colorado (a very wet route, granted).

Prior to the challenge, everyone who wanted to take part paid £10 into the pot. The top stepper on each team would win £20 of that money and, as Karl put it, the winning team would earn bragging rights over the other. The teams raised almost £500, with Karl achieving the most steps for Team Brand at 629,461 and Stacey Day in Team Retail really going for it and reaching 760,349.

With £455 going to Cancer Research UK following Karl and Stacey taking home their winnings, Bridgehead have done an amazing job of spreading awareness of the charity, raising crucial funds, and collaborating with each other in the process. Everyone has also learnt just how effective walking is when it comes to keeping fit, as it can help you to maintain a healthy weight, lower blood pressure, increase energy levels, improve sleep and even combat stress.

Well done to everyone from Team Brand and Team Retail who participated. We’re confident that your dedication will inspire colleagues across SGS Packing Europe to leave the car at home and get some fresh air more often.
