Adam Invites You to Hull's Angels Wargaming Club

Adam Stephenson holds the important role of European Management Accountant at our Bridgehead office. Whilst focusing on best practice within our business during the working week, in his spare time he applies his passion and attention to detail to something entirely different.
Hull’s Angels Wargaming Club began ten years ago when Ross Pemble from Winifred Holtby School set it up in the school hall. After two years of success and growing interest, it moved into an old sports hall down Grimston Street in Hull city centre. Ross continued to run the club for a while, but sadly passed away a few years ago. However, his legacy lives on, as Hull’s Angels Wargaming Club now has over 600 members on its Facebook group and welcomes around 200 regular members to its epic gatherings.
Adam volunteers at the club and loves every minute of it: “All kinds of games are played, including popular favourites such as Warhammer Age of Sigmar, Warhammer 40K, Star Wars X-Wing and Guildball, as well as more specialist games like Necromunda, Mordheim and Blood Bowl. We also have a few card games like Keyforge and some boardgames being played at the moment.”

The culture of tabletop gaming in Hull is going through a bit of a renaissance of late. The BoardRoom down Newland Avenue has been hugely popular since opening a few years ago, and roleplaying games are seeing a resurgence too, especially thanks to clubs such as HAWC.
Adam says: “Historically, tabletop wargaming could be difficult to get into, as you needed a lot of models that all came unassembled and unpainted. Nowadays, the games companies are offering a much greater variety of wargaming. You can pick up some games at a small price point that are already preassembled. The local wargaming scene has really been helped by these smaller games that don't need a great deal of prep work and can be played in an hour.”
Whilst volunteering, Adam naturally makes sure to get involved in some gaming himself: ”Star Wars X-Wing is my current favourite. Each player builds a squadron of ships from the Star Wars universe and attempts to shoot down their opponents. The ruleset is simple, the models come pre-painted and the community is great!”
As for his SGS colleagues, Adam reckons there will be some around who secretly play these types of games but he hasn’t yet seen them at a Hull’s Angels Wargaming Club session: “If anyone wants to come down and try one of the games, they'd be more than welcome. I’d highly recommend that you give it a go if you’re interested. It's never been easier to get into tabletop gaming and there’s one for every taste, it’s a fantastic experience.”
To find out more and get involved, check out the Hull’s Angels Wargaming Club website. If you really get into it, the club also has its own online shop that’s full of branded merchandise, from mugs to hoodies.
