See Goals Football Club

We’ve received a sporty update from our colleagues in Marks London. Their team, the See Goals Football Club, is thanking colleagues for their support during the inaugural season in the Archbishop Park Waterloo Wednesday Summer 5's Pro Direct Premier League. Simon Newbegin, the See Goals FC Manager and player, has sent us the official May/June season report:

Gameweek 1 - vs Oranje Duivels – “The Warm Up”
An intense 2-hour warmup session backfired, leaving Paolo and Rob with injuries and the rest of the team with little left in the tank. It was the first time any of the Gulls had played together and it showed, as they were outclassed by quality Dutch opposition playing awesome football. Paolo gallantly volunteered to play in goal and had more touches of the ball than anyone as the Seagulls were put to the sword, 3-0. Matt hit the post late on with a ‘worm-burner’ but really the Gulls were lucky it was only 3.

Gameweek 2 - vs Keepyupeys – “Enter The Deep Heat”
Out of the frying pan, into the fire. With Rob out injured and Zach pulling out half an hour before kick-off for unspecified reasons, the Gulls went into their second game with no substitutes and little confidence. This week the warmup routine was replaced by lashings of Deep Heat in a bid to save some energy for kick-off. The Seagulls carried an attacking threat, hitting the post on a few occasions; however, a double decker bus could be driven straight through their defence. And it was. 6 times. It felt harsh as the scoreline didn’t reflect the game, but the encouraging sign was that the Gulls created chances. We march on.

Gameweek 3 - vs Park Plaza FC – “The Pinnylty”
The Gulls stepped into this game on the back of two straight defeats and with a -9 goal difference. See Goals were seeing plenty of goals, unfortunately they were all going in their own net. We needed a goal. We needed a saviour. We needed an opposition player to walk into his own penalty area and gift us a penalty, and we got it. Pinny coolly stepped up and stroked the ball into the corner, the Seagulls had their goal! The Gulls should have scored more in what was a heated game with tempers flaring due to persistent slide tackles from a 5’5” opponent. As the final whistle blew there was relief all round, not least for anyone watching. It wasn’t a classic, but it didn’t matter, we had 3 points and a goal. The Seagulls had arrived.

Gameweek 4 - vs SYNT FC – “Wayne’s World”
SYNT FC provided the opposition this week as the Seagulls looked to build on their first win of the season. More goals were needed, especially a goal from open play. Big Darren (Zach’s ex personal trainer) brought his brother, Wayne, to make his debut. The game started with 4 vs 4 as SYNT’s fifth man was running late, which provided plenty of space for the free-flowing Gulls to exploit. Controversy then engulfed the game as See Goals were awarded a penalty. Captain Newbegin converted it confidently but was adjudged to have made two steps in the run up rather than one. The retake again flew past the keeper, but hit the post... Newbegin was to make amends moments later though by scoring a goal, from open play, a real collector’s item! Four more followed for the Gulls, with new boy Wayne scoring a spectacular hat trick and Paolo also getting on the scoresheet. The addition of Wayne’s pace had given the Gulls their wings. This was a rout. Like seagulls descending on a bag of chips, we took SYNT FC apart 5-2.

Gameweek 5 - vs Carlton Cole – “Rage Against The Machine”
Next up was the team with the longest name in the league - Carlton Cole. Goal. Always Believe In Your Soul. They were bottom of the league without a win, but had registered a high scoring draw against top of the league in their previous game. The Gulls needed to be wary. Kick-off saw a cagey game unfold, both sides not wanting to give anything away. Carlton Cole eventually broke the deadlock, tearing apart the Gulls defence with a route 1 move. This team had good individuals and it was clear how much a win would mean to them as they argued every decision with the referee. Then, penalty to the Gulls! Paolo confidently placed the ball on the spot and buried it into the corner, the Deep Heat was clearly kicking in. The game was tight and it looked destined for a draw until a stinging shot from Steve was spilled by the keeper, straight into the path of club captain Newbegin. Bang, 2-1! A nervy end saw the Gulls use all of their nouse to waste as much time as possible and see out the game. Make no mistake, this had been tough, but a hardworking team performance ensured a 3rd straight win.

An exciting season so far! During which, the top scorers were Wayne (3), Simon N (2), Paolo O (2) and Pinny B (1). There are also some amusing stats, such as Paolo O achieving an average Deep Heat body coverage of 89%, which is pretty impressive. We’re also delighted to see that See Goals won three of the five matches (1-0 against Park Plaza FC, 5-2 against Synt FC, and 2-1 against the wonderfully named Carlton Cole. Goal! Always Believe in Your Soul).

See Goals are currently fourth out of nine in the league table. If you’d like to show your support, you can watch them play and even purchase an official SGFC kit from the club
shop (under Simon’s desk).

On behalf of everyone at SGS Packaging Europe, we wish the See Goals all the best for the rest of the season!
