Tough Mudder in Aid of The Freedom Stroke Club

Lee Wardell is an IT Workflow Systems Engineer at our Maltings office in Hull. Like many of our colleagues, he spends his working day carrying out specialist processes to ensure that the company runs smoothly, then focuses some of his spare time on getting involved in exciting fundraising activity.

With a Tough Mudder event in Skipton on the horizon, Lee has been busy preparing for a fun and messy day in aid of a worthy cause: “It takes place on Saturday 27th July and so far there are four of us taking part – me, Will Robinson, Liam Smith and Ryan Lowe. This will be my third Tough Mudder, having done the Midlands edition with Liam and Ryan, and Will completed Total Warrior last year, so we’re no strangers to physical challenges.”

The main charity benefitting from the event itself is Help for Heroes, but Lee and his colleagues are also fundraising for The Freedom Stroke Club, which is based in Hull: “They don't receive the same exposure that mainstream charities do and donations go a long way. The reason for me personally supporting this charity is that my father-in-law had a stroke around six years ago. Both he and the family have received tremendous support from the club and we wanted to help out as much as possible to give something back.”

The Maltings chaps realise that you can’t just give do types of events willy-nilly as they can be very demanding, so Lee recently ran the Hull Half Marathon, whilst Ryan and Will did the Hull 10K on the same day: “This gives us a great starting position, but we also go to regular sessions at a local gym on our dinner break and run at the weekend. You need a good mix of cardio, upper body strength and team camaraderie to complete the course”

We also asked Lee what he’s most excited about and what he thinks will be its biggest challenge: “Having completed Tough Mudder on a few occasions, I expect the course to be as unforgiving as the previous ones. I won't be looking forward to Arctic Enema or the Electric Shock Therapy obstacles, but I am looking forward to the teamwork and sense of achievement in completing the course and raising some much-needed money for the charities.”

If you work in our Maltings office, you’ll easily spot the charity bucket for cash donations. Or if you’d rather give online, visit their JustGiving page and make sure to click the box for Gift Aid too.

“Help for Heroes already receive a large number of donations from the event and we’ve collected £200+ each over the last few years,” adds Lee, “so this year we wanted the local charity to benefit just as much and every penny will make a big difference.”
