Don't Forget to Donate to Bridgehead's Fundraiser for Parkinson's UK

Our colleagues at SGS Bridgehead really do love putting their skills to the test, especially when it’s in aid of charity. A few months ago Abbie Steel, who works in the ReproGraphics department, contacted all staff to see if anyone would like to take part in the Three Peaks Challenge to raise funds for Parkinson’s UK. The response was amazing, with 35 people jumping at the opportunity to get involved.

Since then, Abbie and her fellow fundraisers have been preparing for the big day, which will see them tackle the Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough in under twelve hours. All in all, the walk is 24 miles long and includes 5,200 feet of ascent, presenting beautiful views of this part of the Pennine range, which encircles the head of the valley of the River Ribble in the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

“There are a lot of people training,” says Abbie. “Some are visiting the gym regularly, others are going for weekend walks, and some like myself are doing both! A couple of the team have managed a ten-mile walk so far, others six miles, and a few have done just a couple but are building their resilience significantly.”

To encourage and support her colleagues, Abbie has been offering fitness advice and inviting everyone to let her know about their walking progress and physical training: “Everyone is 100% excited and looking forward to the day. It really is such a challenge and some people are a bit nervous, but can you blame them?”

The group aims to raise £800 for Parkinson’s UK, which offers friendship, support, expert information and advice to anyone who needs it, simultaneously funding ground-breaking research into the condition and leading the way to finding a cure. With Parkinson’s disease affecting 145,000 people in the UK (one adult in every 350) and an additional person diagnosed with it every single hour, it’s clear that the charity deserves to be supported.

So far Abbie and her colleagues have raised £132, which is 16% of their target, with many more donations expected to roll in as we get closer to the event. If you’d like to donate to their JustGiving page, every pound is greatly appreciated. Please make sure to tick the box for Gift Aid too, as this will allow the charity to claim an additional 25% without you having to pay an extra penny.

“The Three Peaks Challenge is a lot more adventurous than the 5k and 10k runs we’ve done in the past,” adds Abbie, “so any donations will really inspire the team to keep on going and finish it within the 12-hour limit.”

The team members have been told to expect and prepare for the worst, yet levels of morale are always high because the people at Bridgehead love doing everything they can to support charities and the local community. We wish them all the very best with this mighty endeavour!
