SGS Apprentices Hold Charity Bake Sale
Holly Nicklas is a PPM
Apprentice at our office in The Maltings. Along with her fellow apprentices,
she’s been busy organising a range of fundraising events in aid of our four
chosen charities for this year: Hull Homeless Community Project, Hull and East
Yorkshire Mind, Yorkshire Cancer Research and Aaron’s Battle.
Following a fantastic Fun
Day that was held at our Bridgehead branch, which raised over £300, a bake sale
was set up at The Maltings for colleagues to enjoy a sweet treat in exchange
for a small donation.
“Our bake sale spread
consisted of muffins, vegan and glute free cupcakes, chocolate cake, doughnuts,
cookies and flapjack,” says Holly. “The day went really well, as we had plenty
of delicious baked goods to sell and our co-workers kindly donated money to our
four amazing charities. It was great fun too.”
Our apprenticeship scheme combines
specific responsibilities with mentoring, development days and the gaining of
valuable qualifications. With sixteen apprentices in Hull and the scheme
proving very successful, we’re now in the process of rolling out the second
intake in Hull and also Birmingham.
“I’m really enjoying my
apprenticeship,” Holly tells us. “I’ve learnt plenty of communication skills by
working here and gained a lot more confidence since I started last year. I think it’s a really good company to
work for and I’ve been given a lot of great opportunities to take part in. As a
result, I’ve met so many kind and supportive people along the way.”
The bake sale raised an
additional £68.02 for the four
charities, which will help them to continue their crucial work within the
community. For instance, the team at Hull Homeless Community Project focus on
supporting anyone who is affected by or at risk of homelessness, including care
leavers, sofa surfers, families, children, vulnerable women, prison leavers,
veterans and the elderly. Meanwhile, Hull and East Yorkshire Mind makes sure
that anyone with a mental health problem has somewhere to turn to for advice
and support, simultaneously training businesses to become mental health
champions.
Yorkshire Cancer
Research was founded way back in 1925 and works across the region, helping people to avoid, survive and
cope with cancer. As the largest independent regional cancer charity in
England, it’s a fantastic organisation that makes a huge difference to lives
across Yorkshire. And last but certainly by no means least, Aaron’s Battle was
originally set up to raise funds for a young man called Aaron Winstanley, who
had been diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. We were very sorry to hear about
Aaron’s passing in September last year, but he has left a lasting legacy in the
form of a charity that helps other people to receive the treatment that they
need.
“All of our chosen charities have
different personal meanings to many of the apprentices,” adds Holly. “We’re so
grateful to all of our colleagues for constantly getting involved and building
up the funds that we’re raising across The Maltings and Bridgehead. Every pound
goes a long way.”
