RB Science and Innovation Centre

Back in November, a team from SGS The Maltings attended the RB Technology Day at their state-of-the-art Science and Innovation Centre in Hull. This was a brilliant opportunity for our colleagues to showcase the SGS range of services and explore RB’s exciting new premises.

Our presence at the event builds on an existing relationship, as SGS currently produces artwork and reprographics for RB’s Finish and Vanish brands, whilst Marks, another sgsco company, is the creative design agency for all Global Brands. In attendance on the day were Jessica McLish (Account Director), Lynsey Bradford (Client Services Manager) and Jonathan Winn (Production Lead 3D CGI), who together showcased 3D CGI packshots, trade samples and printing plates, whilst explaining the processes and techniques involved and discussing their wide-ranging applications.

“The new Science and Innovation Centre is very modern, light and bright,” says Jessica. “The design and architecture is impressive, as the old building was maintained and a new extension added on. As a result, the original brickwork is visible throughout the interior of the building. It has been designed in a 'street style' with vintage signposts and a cobbled street feel, making it a unique environment and very inspiring.”

This was also an opportunity for us to meet and greet different members of the RB workforce and forge new connections, allowing our team to discuss how SGS can support future projects as part of a growing relationship. We’re always eager to be involved in these types of forward-thinking events, with the recent Tech Expo Humber being another prime example.

Over the last few months the Science and Innovation Centre has been a very popular topic, as it’s a huge investment not only for RB but also the Humber region and the UK as a whole. Its design and construction cost £200m and created 200 new jobs, acting as one of RB’s six major global research and development facilities, where science and innovation are applied to further improve brands such as Nurofen, Durex, Veet and Calgon. In the process, the facility enables the nurturing of scientific talent right here in Hull and creates opportunities for businesses to collaborate on numerous top-tier projects.

We were very pleased to see that the centre has been designed with agile working, collaboration and entrepreneurialism at its core, so you can expect to see a lot of ground-breaking activity taking place there over the coming years. We’re delighted that SGS and Marks are part of this journey, as RB is an exceptional company that is integral to the next generation of scientists and innovators who are committed to the RB slogan: Healthier Lives, Happier Homes.

Meanwhile, the Technology Day had another guest that our team were very excited to meet. Standing eight feet tall and known for performing with celebrities that include Will Smith and Rihanna, Titan the Robot wowed visitors to the Science and Innovation Centre and demonstrated just how interactive he can be. Jessica says that he was slightly scary but brilliant and highly entertaining.
